Hisa Ota was born in Tokyo and came to the U.S. when he was 17. His early life in Japan continues to inform his identity and aesthetic sensibility.

As an art major in college in the U.S., Hisa became interested in working within limits to convey his artistic intent in sculpture, photography, and printmaking. After having worked in various fields as diverse as architecture and bison ranching, he has returned to his original calling, making art.

Living in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Hisa creates art that balances his original Japanese frame of reference, based on simplicity and order, with the sense of freedom that abounds in his vast adopted home. Ultimately, his work is a process of finding a calm center in our complex and fast-changing modern world.
